Philip M. Hamer and Elizabeth Hamer Kegan Award (SAA)

An announcement from the Society of American Archivists:

The Philip M. Hamer and Elizabeth Hamer Kegan Award Subcommittee of the Society of American Archivists seeks nominations for the 2009 award.

This award recognizes an archivist, editor, group of individuals, or institution that has increased public awareness of a specific body of documents through compilation, transcription, exhibition, or public presentation of archives or manuscript materials for educational, instructional, or other public purpose. Archives may include photographs, films, and visual archives. Publication may be in hard copy, microfilm, laser disk, or other circulating medium (including websites) and should have been published during the calendar year 2008.

Recent winners include:
  • 2008 Canadian Broadcasting Corporation / Radio-Canada Digital Archives
  • 2007 National Library of Medicine’s Profiles in Science
  • 2006 State Library and Archives of Florida’s Florida Folklife Digitization and Education Project

Eligibility:
Individual archivists and editors, groups of individuals, organizations.

Application Deadline:
All nominations shall be submitted to the Awards Committee by February 28, 2009.

MAC Presidents' Award

Nominations sought for the MAC Presidents' Award

The MAC Presidents' Award (http://www.midwestarchives.org/presidentsaward.asp) was established in 1986 as a way to recognize significant contributions to the archival profession by individuals, institutions, and/or organizations not directly involved in archival work, but who are knowledgeable about its purpose and intrinsic value. The success of archival work often depends on these supporters making outstanding contributions to the archival profession through such areas as legislation, publicity, advocacy, and/or long-term fiscal support.

Previous winners of the award with Minnesota ties have included :

2002: Prof. Clarke Chambers, Social Welfare History Archives
1997: 3M Corporation
1992: Minnesota State Senator Allan H. Spear and Representative Steve Trimble
1989: Minnesota Future Resources Commission

If you are familiar with an individual, group or corporation who you feel is deserving of this award, please consider nominating them.

Doctoral Fellowships in Archival Studies

NEW 2009 DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS IN ARCHIVAL STUDIES

Doctoral Fellowships in Archival Studies are currently available through a new eight-campus initiative for individuals who are interested in pursuing careers as educators and scholars and who would be entering doctoral programs in Fall 2009. Applicants must apply for both the Fellowship and admission to one or more of the eight participating doctoral programs: University of California, Los Angeles; University of Michigan; University of Maryland; University of Texas, Austin; Simmons College; University of Wisconsin, Madison; University of Pittsburgh; and University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Each Fellowship will provide full tuition and annual stipends of $20,000 to Fellows for the first two years of their doctoral study at partnering academic programs. Those academic programs will provide full tuition and stipends to their Fellows for two additional years of study.

To underscore the Fellowship initiatives‚ emphasis on strengthening archival education and scholarship, all Doctoral Fellows will attend, expenses-paid, annual Archival Education and Research Institutes (AERI). These weeklong summer institutes will be held each year for doctoral students and faculty in Archival Science from academic institutions nationally and around the world and will address a broad range of research methodologies, pedagogical techniques, and curriculum development. The first institute will be held at UCLA during the week of July 6th, 2009. A limited number of additional scholarships to attend the institutes will be available each year for doctoral students who are enrolled in any U.S. Program. The Fellowship application deadline is January 9, 2009. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident in the U.S. Persons of minority racial and ethnic backgrounds are particularly encouraged to apply. Waldo Gifford Leland Award (SAA)

Call for Nominations: 2007 Waldo Gifford Leland Award

Have you read a great new book about archives? Have you come across an exceptional finding aid for a newly-processed archival or manuscript collection? Have you encountered a documentary publication that is head and shoulders above the rest?

If you have, why don’t you consider nominating it for the Waldo Gifford Leland Award?

The Leland Award subcommittee of the Society of American Archivists invites you to nominate a monograph, finding aid, or documentary publication published in North America in 2007 for the Waldo Gifford Leland Award. (Please note: periodicals are not eligible.) The prize is awarded each year to encourage and reward "writing of superior excellence and usefulness in the field of archival history, theory, and practice."

Established in 1959, the award honors American archival pioneer Waldo Gifford Leland, president of the Society of American Archivists in the 1940s and one of the driving forces behind the founding of the National Archives.

MAC/SOA Conference Road Trip for Students Contest

Attention Students and Archival Educators!
The Columbus Road Trip Contest for Students is now open!

The contest will give away NINE free student conference registrations for the joint annual meeting of the Midwest Archives Conference & Society of Ohio Archivists to nine lucky MAC-region* archives students.

Contest ends March 1. Winning contestants will be notified by March 5. One entry per contestant. Entries limited to MAC-region* archives students.

The MAC/SOA meeting will be held May 3-5, 2007, in Columbus, Ohio. Good luck and we look forward to a large student turnout in Columbus!

Scholarship Award for Professional Development

Criteria and Purpose for Selection
Established in 2006, this award supports current members of the Twin Cites Archives Round Table who are students or individuals working with archival materials to attend an archives related regional or national conference, symposium, or educational workshop. The goal of the scholarship is to stimulate greater participation in the professional activities of these associations and to provide continuing education opportunities.

Eligibility
Those eligible for the award must be a TCART member and must be working in an archives or information management field or be a student in a related program. Applications will be evaluated based on a brief statement of intent and by information provided by a contact that can provide a reference for the individual. Recipients are eligible to reapply after three years.

Award
The award consists of up to $250 in support of registration, travel and accommodation expenses associated for a conference, symposium, or a workshop. One scholarship of $250 will be awarded each year. In the event that the selected application does not require the full award, the remainder may be given to a second applicant.

Application Process
The applicant will submit by email the following items.
  • Completed application form
  • Statement of intent (150 words)
  • Contact information for a single reference that can attest to the applicant’s interest and need
All applications should be submitted to the president of TCART by February 1st. The recipient will be notified by March 15.

Selection
The selection will be made by the four TCART officers.

Award Recipients
Following the conference or symposium the award recipient will write an essay for the TCART Newsletter sharing their experience and how the event assisted in their professional development. The recipient will be reimbursed after the conference/symposium/workshop.

Hamer Kegan Award (SAA)

This award, given annually by SAA, recognizes an archivist, editor, group of individuals, or institution that has increased public awareness of a specific body of documents through compilation, transcription, exhibition, or public presentation of archives or manuscript materials for education, instructional, or other public purpose.
